Chris Hemsworth reveals why he regrets taking selfie with Billie Eilish: ‘We will never be friends’

Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor renowned for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently expressed his regret over taking a selfie with Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish. During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Hemsworth reflected on the encounter that took place at the 2024 Oscars, revealing that the moment had transformed him from a colleague to a fan, which he humorously claimed would prevent any possibility of friendship between them.

The actor attended the prestigious awards ceremony with his wife, Elsa Pataky, and spotted Eilish while they were at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on March 10, 2024. Hemsworth recounted his internal struggle, torn between the desire to capture a memorable moment for his children and the realization that asking for a photo might undermine their professional rapport. “I got a photograph with Billie Eilish at the Oscars and I remember thinking, ‘Ah, don’t do it, don’t do it.’ But I was like, ‘Nah, my kids are going to love this,'” he said.

This seemingly innocent selfie, however, had repercussions for Hemsworth’s aspirations of friendship with the “Bad Guy” singer. Reflecting on the fleeting moment, he joked, “The moment I took the photo, I was like, I went from work colleague to now like a fan. We will never be friends. Never be best friends.”

The selfie captured Eilish sandwiched between Hemsworth and his wife, Pataky, with the actor dressed in a sharp black suit and an unbuttoned white shirt, while Eilish sported a striking bedazzled white dress. That evening, Eilish and her brother Phineas O’Connell took home an Oscar for their original song “What Was I Made For,” featured in the blockbuster film “Barbie.”

Colbert, surprised by Hemsworth’s candid admission, inquired whether they had ever worked together. Hemsworth clarified that while they operated in the same industry and often crossed paths, they had never collaborated directly. He humorously compared their relationship to that of colleagues with Anthony Hopkins, underlining the distinction between professional acquaintances and friendships.

In addition to his selfie regret, Hemsworth recently found himself in hot water for breaking the no-phones policy at the Met Gala, where he was a co-host alongside Anna Wintour. In a separate interview with E! News, Hemsworth admitted to snapping numerous selfies during his first experience at the high-profile fashion event. “Selfies everywhere,” he recalled, adding that he often found himself asking, “When did I take that? Let’s delete that one.”

The excitement of large award shows is palpable for Hemsworth, who relocated from Los Angeles back to Australia in 2015 to be closer to his family. Being surrounded by a crowd of celebrities is a rare experience for the actor, making these events particularly thrilling.

As Hemsworth navigates the intersection of fame and personal interactions, his lighthearted regret over the Billie Eilish selfie serves as a reminder of the complexities of celebrity culture, where professional boundaries can easily blur in the pursuit of cherished memories for loved ones.
