The first trailer has been released for Tim Burton’s anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continues the story that was told by the original movie upon its release in 1988. Michael Keaton is back as the ghost with the most, and he’s joined by returning stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. All three can be seen in the new teaser trailer, along with franchise newcomer Jenna Ortega, following photos that were recently released revealing a first look at the characters. The sequel will hit theaters just in time for the spooky holiday season, set to arrive on Sept. 6. Fans can check out the first official footage from the movie by watching the new trailer below.
The official synopsis for the sequel reads, “Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.”
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the screenplay for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with the story coming from Seth Grahame-Smith. Along with the returning stars (Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara), the movie also stars Jenna Ortega, who has been cast as the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia Deetz. Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux also star.
“She’s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume, I would say,” Ortega previously teased to Vanity Fair about her new character. “The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.”
The Beetlejuice Sequel Spent Years in Development Hell
This moment has been decades in the making. Tim Burton had considered making a Beetlejuice sequel ever since the original film was released. At one point, he was plotting to move forward with a sequel where Beetlejuice went to Hawaii, though that project wound up fizzling out. There have been other false starts and teases that went nowhere for years before production finally got started on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2022. Filming took place in 2023 and was wrapped by November after a hold-up due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in movie theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
