The Kansas City Chiefs’ star swapped football for baseball as he headed to watch the MLB Postseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes swapped the football for the baseball bat as he headed to the Kauffman Stadium to watch the Royals take on the New York Yankees and even threw in some trash talk, but it blew up in his face as the Yankees had the last laugh.
The triple Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP is a big fan of baseball, after all he is the son of an ex-MLB pitcher, and headed to watch the postseason American League Divisional Series clash along with Gehrig Dieter.
Dieter, who also played for the Chiefs until 2022, was backing the Bronx Bombers whilst Mahomes was firmly in the camp of the Missouri-based side and took it a little too far when the Royals tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth as he got in the face of his ex-colleague.
But it all blew up in the quarterback’s face when a Giancarlo Stanton solo shot Yankees the win to tie the series at 2-2, before going on to eliminate the Royals from the playoffs a day later on October 11.
“The Yanks obviously took an early lead, I was pretty loud in a quiet environment with the Royal fans around,” Dieter told reports of the incident with Mahomes. “But when there’s a spark of energy like that going’ on in that inning, obviously [Mahomes] is gonna get fired up, and have some fun.
“Last night was great. Glad that they won the game. It was a hectic environment, but I had a lot of fun, obviously.”
Yankees eliminate Royals
Sadly for Mahomes, Dieter really did have the final life as the Yankees sealed the deal a day later with a 3-1 victory at the Kauffman Stadium to progress on to the American League Championship Series, where they will face the either the Cleveland Guardians or the Detroit Tigers.
A Juan Soto single brought Gleyber Torres in to open the scoring in the top of the first inning for the east coasters, before Torres singled in the fifth to bring Alex Verdugo home to score and give the Yankees a commanding lead.
Then Stanton also singled as Aaron Judge made it 3-0 on the night, until a Vinnie Pasquantino double to deep left-center field offered the Royals some hope as Bobby Witt crossed the line to make it 3-1, although it wasn’t enough in the end.
