O’Shea Tells Shaq A Story From Straight Out Of Compton That No One Has Ever Heard…(video)

O’Shea Jackson Jr., the son of legendary rapper Ice Cube, recently shared an intimate and revealing story about his journey to land the role of his father in the acclaimed film “Straight Outta Compton.” In a candid conversation with NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal, Jackson Jr. recounted the rigorous audition process that took him two years, a testament to both his dedication and the high expectations surrounding the project.

Initially pursuing a different path at the University of Southern California, Jackson Jr. had aspirations of writing scripts for video games. However, when his father expressed the desire for him to portray his younger self in the N.W.A biopic, he felt compelled to audition. Despite his father’s confidence in him, Jackson Jr. was hesitant, fearing that if he failed to secure the role, it would reflect poorly on his acting abilities.

The auditioning process was grueling. Jackson Jr. went through multiple auditions and coaching sessions, and as the months turned into years, he began to question his decision to leave college. “Now I’m scared. Now I feel like I threw everything away,” he admitted, reflecting on the pressure he felt as he watched his peers graduate without him. The fear of failure loomed large, compounded by the desire to succeed for himself and his siblings.

After two years of auditions, Jackson Jr. finally participated in a screen test that would determine the chemistry between him and the other potential cast members. He vividly recalled the day of the test, where he met fellow actors vying for the roles of Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. Despite the competition, he felt a strong connection to his co-stars, which ultimately contributed to his selection for the role.

Upon receiving the news that he had been cast as Ice Cube, Jackson Jr. experienced a mix of relief and new pressure. “The fear left, but then it started because like damn now I got to work,” he said, recognizing the weight of portraying such an iconic figure.

One pivotal moment during the production was the omission of a significant scene from the script—one that portrayed a key moment of his father’s career. Determined to advocate for the integrity of his character, Jackson Jr. leveraged his academic background and cinematic knowledge to discuss the importance of the scene with the director and producers. His efforts paid off, and the scene was reinstated, allowing him to fully capture his father’s essence on screen.

Reflecting on his performance, both Jackson Jr. and O’Neal acknowledged the film’s impact and the significance of portraying a figure as influential as Ice Cube. Jackson Jr. expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase a side of his father that had never been seen before, stating, “This is my first time being able to immortalize his level of pissed off.”

The conversation between Jackson Jr. and O’Neal also touched on the challenges of motivating the next generation. O’Neal shared his own experiences with his children, emphasizing the importance of having an internal drive to succeed. Jackson Jr. echoed this sentiment, highlighting the necessity of finding one’s own motivation, especially when external pressures are less pronounced.

As Jackson Jr.’s career continues to flourish, he remains committed to diversifying his roles and proving his versatility as an actor. With notable projects following “Straight Outta Compton,” including “Godzilla” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” he is poised to carve out his own legacy in Hollywood while honoring his father’s influential contributions to music and culture.
