‘No cave in the world deep enough’: Former Top Gun instructor on Iran strike (video)

In a recent discussion about potential military action against Iran, a former Top Gun instructor provided insights into the capabilities of the B-2 stealth bomber and its associated munitions. The B-2, known for its unique ability to penetrate heavily fortified targets, is equipped with the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a 30,000-pound bomb designed to reach deeply buried installations.

The B-2’s stealth features allow it to evade detection, making it a critical asset for the U.S. Air Force. With a wingspan of 172 feet and the capability for mid-air refueling, the B-2 can carry out long-range missions with precision. The aircraft is able to deploy Guided Bomb Units (GBUs), which utilize advanced technology to ensure accuracy even against fortified targets. This capability is essential in modern warfare, particularly when facing adversaries that hide critical infrastructure underground.

The discussion touched on the precision of these guided munitions, emphasizing that even a strike within 50 feet of the intended target would still be considered a significant miss. However, advanced GPS systems integrated into the munitions can provide guidance to ensure they hit their targets with remarkable accuracy, even when those targets are buried hundreds of feet beneath the surface.

The former instructor noted that no cave in the world is impervious to the B-2’s munitions. With the right calculations and targeting processes, the bomb can penetrate deeply and cause substantial damage to fortified positions. The discussion highlighted the importance of weapon nearness calculations, which involve determining the optimal impact angle and position to maximize the bomb’s effectiveness.

Reflecting on past military operations, the instructor recalled the successful use of similar munitions in 2017, demonstrating the U.S. military’s readiness to deploy these weapons when necessary. The pilots tasked with these missions are extensively trained and prepared for the challenges they may face, underscoring their dedication and capability in high-stakes environments.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, particularly in relation to Iran, the capabilities of the B-2 and its munitions serve as a reminder of the advanced technology at the disposal of the U.S. military. The discussion revealed a keen awareness of both the challenges and solutions presented by modern warfare, reinforcing the belief that with the right tools and training, the military can effectively address threats posed by adversaries with fortified defenses.
