Sports commentator, Stephen A. Smith, recently appeared on Sherri Shepherd’s daytime talk show and commented on the upcoming performance when asked if he was excited.
“There’s one thing she’s not…She ain’t Beyonce.” Following the remark, was negative feedback from the audience who booed him. Shepherd then replied, “Beyonce’s performed, but she’s had her time…Rihanna’s coming back!” After getting a taste of Rihanna’s Navy fan base, Smith took to Twitter in a video apologizing, stating he wanted her to know she is a superstar who is worthy of performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Beyonce dominated the Super Bowl stage on two occasions: a solo act in 2013, with Destiny’s Child as special guests, and in 2016 along with Cold Play and Bruno Mars. We all know that when Bey performs, she gives us a show. But whoever said that Rihanna doesn’t do the same?
Rihanna has proven her greatness. Period.
Both Rihanna and Beyonce are incredible entertainers who have set the standard and paved the way for many artists after them and paid homage to the entertainers before them. Both icons have changed the culture of the music industry and what it looks like for a Black woman to dominate in that space. Not only that, but these two have given us some of the best melodic moments in history. Therefore, there is no comparison. Instead, we celebrate them both.
Lala Anthony had this to say on the Breakfast Club morning show about both Rihanna and Beyonce:
“As a Black woman, let’s acknowledge and celebrate the fact that we have two amazing talented Black women who are able to do the halftime show at the Super Bowl,” she said. “Let’s acknowledge and uplift and applaud the fact that on such a huge forum, you had Beyonce and now you have Rihanna.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight! Rihanna shared what viewers can expect from her performance. “I want to incorporate a lot of culture. I want to incorporate different aspects of entertainment and things that I enjoy…I want to celebrate the music that I’ve made.”
