Liverpool are set to challenge Real Madrid for the signing of PSG forward Kylian Mbappe, according to FIFA agent Marco Kirdemir.
Mbappe’s future in the French capital is in doubt after he informed PSG by letter that he does not plan to extend his contract beyond next summer.
He has insisted he would be happy to see out the final year of his contract at the club, but the French champions have no intention of allowing him to leave for free next June and would prefer to sell him this summer.
Real Madrid are the favourites to land the 24-year-old after they narrowly missed out on his signature last year when he made a last-minute U-turn and decided to stay at PSG.
But Kirdemer believes the Spanish giants will face stiff competition for Mbappe from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
‘Liverpool is in competition with Real Madrid and wants to pay a fortune for Mbappe,’ Kirdemir told Marca.
Despite Mbappe being set to enter the final year of his deal, Kirdemir still expects PSG to command a huge transfer fee in order to let him move on.
He believes a figure in the region of €300m (£258m) is a possibility, which would make Mbappe the most expensive player in history.
That record is currently held by Mbappe’s PSG team-mate Neymar, who cost the French club £198m in 2017.
Signing Mbappe would smash Liverpool’s transfer record, which stands at the £85m they paid for Darwin Nunez last summer.
The Uruguayan had a mixed first year in England, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, before losing his place in the team at the back end of the season.
Nunez was seen as more of a raw talent when he arrived on Merseyside, but Mbappe would be expected to hit the ground running if he does move to England after netting 212 goals in 260 matches for PSG and winning the World Cup Golden Boot last year.
Mbappe has previously held talks with Liverpool, having revealed that he spoke to the Premier League club in 2022 before opting to remain at PSG.
He also had discussions with the Reds in 2017, and has admitted they are his mum’s favourite club.
