After 54 holes, the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am came to an unexpected conclusion! Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Aberg, and Matthieu Pavon all achieved podium finishes despite the event being cut short. For Aberg, this was particularly significant because he was getting close to a lesser-known record that Tiger Woods had established back in his very early career.
The Swedish golfer settled for a runner-up position after finishing one stroke behind Clark. He currently ranks 11th in OWGR, indicating that this accomplishment increased it. Regretfully, it was insufficient to beat the 48-year-old’s record. Aberg went up against Woods to see who could become the world’s fastest golfer to hit rank 11 after going pro since OWGR’s founding.
The 15-time major winner still holds the record for most competitions attended (17). After eighteen events, Ludvig Aberg managed to secure the eleventh position, finishing in second place once more. Though Aberg still has a ways to go before he can be considered as great as the legendary golfer, many have been reminded of Woods’s formative years by his debut. The Swedish golfer has even outperformed the 48-year-old in several areas!
The Swedish golfer has exceeded everyone’s expectations since going pro in 2023. It is inevitable to draw similarities with the greatest players in the game. A pro on the PGA Tour observed him play and remarked, “I didn’t really know who he was.” He was the next f—ing Tiger Woods, I thought after we played six holes together.
Similar to his first competition, Aberg finished higher than Woods. On his debut, he placed 25th, whereas the renowned golfer started out in 60th place. In addition, the 24-year-old made his Ryder Cup 2023 debut for the European squad, making history as the first player to participate in the biennial competition without participating in any majors. Remarkably, he went on to win the competition in his very first year as a professional.
When comparing the first two seasons, Tiger Woods’s record is rather self-explanatory. Of the eight tournaments he participated in, he took first place in two, five finished in the top five, and seven in the top 25. Conversely, Ludvig Aberg participated in four DP World Tour events and thirteen PGA Tour events during his first season. On both Tours, he managed to score a maiden victory! In addition, he achieved three top-25 results on the DP World Tour and eight top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour.
