Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of the German automotive giant, is setting the stage for an electrifying future with the development of its first all-electric sports car, slated for a grand entrance in 2025. Aiming to rival the likes of the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT it will have a staggering 1,000 horsepower output, potentially becoming the most potent road car in the firm’s illustrious lineage.
Poised to replace the V8-engined GT 63 4-Door Coupe, the upcoming AMG model won’t merely be an electric version of a current design but an entirely new breed of performance car. It’s set to debut the company’s dedicated AMG.EA platform, tailored for high-performance electric vehicles, enabling low, sleek profiles synonymous with AMG’s current combustion-engine sports cars.
Underpinning the car’s sports credentials is an advanced electric motor technology, pioneered by the British engineering firm Yasa, which Mercedes acquired in 2021. These are cutting-edge, disc-shaped axial-flux units that offer an impressive power-to-weight ratio, high torque, and power densities, all while occupying less space and increasing efficiency. Each motor weighs just 24 kg yet delivers a punchy 480 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque.
So a relatively pedestrian twin-motor setup can deliver close to 1,000 horsepower and 1,360 Nm torque, making even the AMG EQS 53 4Matic’s 751 horsepower feel underpowered.
As we step into the dimensions of this automotive marvel, the Vision 2025 concept – a precursor to the production model – measures a stately 5,100 mm in length with a generous wheelbase of 3,000 mm. This promises ample interior space without compromising handling and aerodynamics. The balancing of form and function will be helped by active aerodynamic components, which can boost downforce or low drag as needed.
Robert Lesnik, head of Mercedes-Benz exterior design, sheds light on the car’s aesthetics. A low and commanding stance, coupled with superior practicality and aerodynamic finesse, defines the upcoming model’s design ethos. What’s more, AMG.EA allows for an alluringly low silhouette and efficient aerodynamics, while still enabling four adults to travel in comfort.
The car will feature a new type of slim, energy-dense battery using silicon anode material from Sila with a promised 40% increase in energy density over the conventional graphite anodes.
While exact performance figures and prices remain under wraps, the bits already revealed are enough to get everyone excited! AMG is not tiptoeing but thundering into the electric era with an offering that could redefine the electric sports saloon niche.
