Margot Robbie was made to feel ‘self-conscious’ during filming of the Barbie movie last year as fans would interact with her co-star Ryan Gosling more than her.
The Australian actress, 33, shot the famous roller skating scene at Venice Beach, California back in June last year in front of members of the public watched on.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Barbie film director Greta Gerwig explained how she found it ‘fascinating’ how fans and set visitors would act differently towards Robbie.
Gerwig, 39, compared the moment to Robbie’s character in the film.
‘How Barbie operates in Barbieland is she’s entirely continuous with her environment,’ Gerwig told the magazine.

‘Even the houses have no walls, because you never need to hide because there’s nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed of. And suddenly finding yourself in the real world and wishing you could hide, that’s the essence of being human.
‘But when we were actually shooting on Venice Beach, with Margot and Ryan in neon rollerblading outfits, it was fascinating because it was actually happening in front of us.
‘People would go by Ryan, high-five him, and say, “Awesome, Ryan, you look great!’ And they wouldn’t actually say anything to Margot,”‘ Gerwig recalled.

‘They’d just look at her. It was just surreal. In that moment, she did feel self-conscious.’
Last year, Robbie revealed she was left ‘mortified’ after photos of her filming Barbie in a mulitcoloured unitard and neon yellow roller-skates went viral.
Appearing on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the former Neighbours star said the publication of photos of her filming at Venice Beach in Los Angeles with Ryan Gosling was the ‘most humiliating moment of her life’.
‘I can’t tell you how mortified we were,’ she said.

‘We look like we’re laughing and having fun, but we were dying on the inside.’
‘I was like, “This is the most humiliating moment of my life,”‘ she added.
‘I knew we had some exteriors to shoot in LA. I knew ok, once you’re doing exteriors, you’re going to get papped.
‘There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to take notice because we stand out a little in those outfits,’ the blonde beauty continued.
‘So I knew there was going to be a little attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did. It was like mad, it was like hundreds of people watching.’

She arrived in Sydney last Wednesday with her husband Tom Ackerley to promote her starring role.
