Italy
The film crew went to Rome on October 4, 2020 to perform a car and motor chase scene through the old streets of Eternal City, including the famous Spanish Steps. “Rome is a city known for being difficult to shoot because of its traffic and cobblestone streets,” said McQ. Every time you drift, your car turns in an uncontrollable direction.”
For the first time in history, the crew was allowed to block the streets of Rome, including one of the city’s most famous streets, Via dei Fori Imperiali, where they filmed for two days. The production team took advantage of this historic moment, and in true “Mission: Impossible” style, to stage every shot entirely with real effects.
After 9 days of filming in the Italian capital, the crew moved to Venice and worked there for 2 weeks. If all the scenes in Rome are shot during the day, every scene set in Venice takes place at night, starting with an all-stars party that takes place at the Doge Castle. Built in 1340, this castle is now one of the most famous symbols of Venice.
Hey Hey
The country chosen to shoot the scenes that took place in Austria in “Mission: Impossible Karma Part 1” was Norway. The film crew has returned to the beautiful Nordic land after nearly 3 years since the time of making Fallout. They did not disappoint: the venue is even more splendid than before.
Norway’s dramatic autumn scene became the perfect setting for dramatic act 3. The car launch into the cliff was filmed at the “Troll Wall” / Trollveggen which is known as the highest vertical rock face in Europe with an altitude of more than 1000 meters.
In addition, the crew also filmed in Åndalsnes, a quaint town near the Rauma River. It is endowed with beautiful nature with majestic mountains and winding rivers and streams. Fans will recognize this location in the footage of Ethan fighting Gabriel (Esai Morales) on the roof of the ship.
Additional action scenes were filmed in Hellesylt – a small village in western Norway. It is surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls, and has a breathtaking “view” of the bay. Tom Cruise said he hopes that the stunts will inspire people to visit Norway and discover its beauty.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE capital Abu Dhabi has given the crew of “Mission: Impossible Karma Part 1” a multitude of options. The first is to mention Midfield Terminal – an airport that was still under construction when this movie was shot. When officially opened, Midfield Terminal will become the largest international airport in the world.
Midfield Terminal Airport is designed with desert inspiration. The scene of Ethan Hunt running on the roof of the building like he was racing between giant steel dunes left the audience with many impressions.
The crew decided right after the airport scene that they would shoot Ethan Hunt meeting Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert in the UAE. It has immense sand dunes, with large flat surfaces “perfect for horse racing scenes”.
Older brother
Besides Italy and Norway, the Mission: Impossible crew chose the UK to record some interesting scenes. Something spectacular happened in the small village of Stoney Middleton in Derbyshire, where the Darlton quarry became a key part of filming. The production team built a specially crafted train track for the locomotive derailment scene. In addition, some of the picturesque scenes in “Mission: Karma Impossible Part 1” as the train rolled were filmed in Levisham, North Yorkshire with a nearby national park.
