An Arsenal fan was forced to private his personal Twitter account after receiving a significant amount of backlash when he announced he had named his newborn son ‘Bukayo’.
Twitter user and avid Gooner @RhysTight, who has since made his account private, revealed to the world on Sunday that he and his partner had welcomed a baby boy to the world.
Rhys shared that the couple had named their son Bukayo, after Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, which led to an uproar of angry and critical responses from users around the world.
Around the time that Rhys decided to private his account, the tweet had been viewed by over 300,000 people, retweeted over 500 times and gained almost 450 likes.
Some of the negative responses included one user tweeting: “Calling your white baby Bukayo is too funny looool it’s gonna be long for him when he’s applying for jobs in 18 years.”
Another said: “Thoughts and prayers go out to Baby Bukayo man that’s gonna be a tough life.”
A popular tweet with over 17,000 views wrote: “Corrr imagine being buzzing at the birth of your kid and then revealing to Twitter of all places you’ve named your white baby Bukayo. Be sat in the hospital dejected as f**k as he gets torn apart at only a few hours old.”
The name ‘Bukayo’ originates from the Yoruba language spoken in southern Nigeria, meaning ‘adds to happiness’ – and many users expressed concerns over whether this was an appropriate name for a caucasian child.
This is not the first time something like this has happened in the Arsenal fanbase and a tweet from 2015 surfaced detailing a teacher’s shock at one of her pupils being named ‘Arshavin’ – after Russian star and former Gooner Andrey Arshavin.
