What’s Hollywood coming to? First we had Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe (a British citizen) pronouncing himself ‘disgusted, amazed, stunned’ by Republican presdential candidates, especially Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry.
Now we have Scarlett Johansson ripping into Santorum’s sweater vests.
‘Oh gosh, so sad,’ the actress said when asked about the former US Senator for Pennsylvania’s favourite fashion item. She added that ‘my dad wore them.’
Rocking the vest: Rick Santorum has made a name for himself wearing his sweater vests on the campaign trail
According to the Huffington Post, Johansson continued: ‘I mean, sweater vests are, I guess, charming for family photos and dinner with the grandparents… But I think you (can) wear a sweater vest ironically, right? Just go to the Lower East Side!’
Johansson, a long-time Obama booster, was speaking at last night’s $250-a-head ‘Runway to Win’ New York fundraiser York for President Barack Obama, which she co-hosted with Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.
Attendees were able to purchase items from an ultra chic Runway to Win line, such as: a tote bag designed by Derek Lam for $75; a collectible makeup bag by Richard Blanch with nail polish in Red-y To Win Red, Victory White and Bo Blue, for $40; a silk scarf featuring Obama’s image by Thakoon Panichgul for $95. Sweater vests do not feature in the line.
Obama was slammed by the Republican National Committee for holding the ‘ritzy’ and ‘celebrity-filled’ event while 12 milion Americans were out of work.
More stylish? Scarlett Johansson said Rick Santorum and the rest of the GOP was ‘so un-fashionable’
Big supporter: Miss Johansson was at a chic New York fundraiser for the president’s re-election campaign
Johansson responded to the RNC: ‘Why would they say that? They are all so unfashionable. Let them say what they want!’
President Obama and his wife, however, were in a different league, she felt. ‘I think they both have a casual cool about them.’
Full disclosure: being made to wear a sweater vest (known in Britain as a ‘tank top’) is among the more traumatic of my childhood memories.
