In the heart of Kenya’s Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, a heartwarming tale unfolded involving one of its youngest inhabitants needing a helping hand.
This lush forest, nestled not far from the towns of Malindi and Kalifi, stands as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, particularly a cherished population of elephants, in their battle against endangerment.
We proudly stand alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Forest Service in their tireless efforts to protect this invaluable ecosystem.
The narrative begins on a January morning, the 4th, when a juvenile elephant finds itself in a precarious predicament after accidentally slipping into a water trough, finding itself trapped.
Distressed, the mother elephant kept a vigilant eye on her stranded calf while an older sibling stood nearby, sharing her concern.
In collaboration with KWS and Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke, our dedicated team understood the urgency of the situation, with the looming threat of poaching hanging over this vulnerable calf.
Regrettably, the mother elephant’s fierce protectiveness prevented us from approaching closely to assist.
Thankfully, when the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) helicopter became unavailable due to a pressing human-wildlife conflict, KWS stepped up to the plate.
With a skilled vet onboard, the KWS helicopter embarked on a delicate journey from Nairobi to the scene. This operation resembled a graceful ballet, demanding both skill and compassion.
Under the expert guidance of the KWS pilot, the mother elephant was gently persuaded away from the water trough without the need for sedation.
This maneuver allowed the Trust teams to approach and rescue the stranded baby elephant safely. The KWS helicopter played a pivotal role throughout the process, ensuring the rescue’s successful execution.
As this heartwarming drama played out before an audience of onlookers, time appeared to stand still.
Each observer held their breath, captivated by the incredible demonstration of human kindness and unwavering dedication to safeguarding the lives of these majestic creatures.
Picture this heart-melting moment as a mother and elder sibling eagerly embraced their little one, marking the beginning of a beautiful new year.
Despite their formidable challenges, the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest stands as a beacon of resilience and dedication to preserving our planet’s natural treasures.
This remarkable rescue is a true testament to the indomitable spirit of these magnificent creatures and the unwavering commitment of humans to protect and honor them.
