Angelina Jolie was fighting back tears on Wednesday. The star told college students she was ‘trying not to cry’ as she dropped her eldest son Maddox, 18, off at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.
In a video shared by jowonnn, who goes by xx_efu, the 44-year-old Oscar-winning actress appears emotional but proud as she wears her hair down while modeling a black lace camisole before agreeing to be photographed with several students.
Another fan, who spoke with Jolie, said Maddox is studying bio engineering and will be living in the dorms.
When asked in the video how long she would be staying in Seoul, Angelina grips her sunglasses and says, ‘I leave today, today is the day that I drop him off.’
The news was met with groans.
The Salt actress then touches her chest as she looks as if she is about to burst into tears.
‘I know, I’m trying not to cry,’ she says as she puts both her hands up.
‘Yes it’s time, thank you very much, it seems like a great school,’ Angelina tells the crowd. ‘I’m sure you’re all going to like it here,’ she added.
Maddox is in a beige sweater, black slacks and black-and-white Vans as he looks up proudly to his mother.
Jolie then asks for one group photo and says they can all share it with each other. When the photo is taken, Maddox ducks out of frame.
There were other fans recording the incident as well.
Richard Choi – who is from Minnesota – shared a photo with Jolie and said: ‘Thank you miss Jolie for having a 40 seconds conversation with me!’
He also posted a very detailed video on YouTube.
Choi said that he had a conversation with Jolie where she revealed that Maddox is studying bio engineering and she also confirmed that he will be living in a dorm room and not off campus.
Richard added that Jolie was kind and Maddox was quiet.
Not seen were his siblings Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne who may have been with dad Brad Pitt back in LA.
His school of choice was announced in April.
‘I’m nothing but proud,’ the Good Shepherd actress told People at the time. ‘I look forward to all he will do.’
Maddox has likely already been learning the Korean language, also referred to as Hangul, from a tutor.
In 2016 Angelina told BBC he was trying German and Russian.
‘All the kids are learning different languages. I asked them what languages they wanted to learn and Shi is learning Khmai, which is the Cambodian language, Pax is focusing on Vietnamese, Mad has taken to German and Russian, Z is speaking French, Vivienne really wanted to learn Arabic, and Knox is learning sign language,’ the Gia star said.
In late 2017, People claimed that Jolie was overseeing homeschooling of all six of her kids at her Los Feliz, California mansion.
They have been learning all the basics like reading and arithmetic. And they also take languages classes and are learning musical instruments, it was alleged.
‘They have tutors for all kinds of subjects,’ said the source. ‘The kids are also very physically active. They like soccer and love skateboarding, and also take self-defense classes.’
Angelina wed Pitt in 2014, but the couple had been in a relationship since at least 2005.
The duo met as co-stars on Mr And Mrs Smith, while Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
Pitt’s relationship with his eldest son Maddox has been strained since they reportedly got into a heated altercation three years ago on a private plane the family were traveling in.
A new report shared by UsWeekly on Wednesday sheds some light on the duo’s fractured relationship in the years following the incident, which was reportedly the trigger for Jolie filing for divorce from the Troy star.
A source says that the teen, whom Angelina adopted from Cambodia in 2002 and Brad legally adopted four years later, remains very close with his mom but not so much with Brad. ‘Brad hasn’t been spending much time with Maddox lately,’ an insider said.
UsWeekly also reported that Brad only found out this summer that Maddox was attending school in South Korea.
