If you thought the nauseating phenomenon of Rich Kids of Instagram couldn’t get any more outlandish, think again.
Rich Babies of Instagram is the latest hashtag to sweep the social media world, prompting parents to post flashy photos of their little darlings languishing in their abundant wealth to show off their opulent lifestyles.
From kicking around in wads of cash, to driving miniature versions of luxury cars and posing with spreads of expensive jewelry, these tots from around the world are set up for privileged lives, and their families want you to know it.
Several toddlers and babies are unabashedly posed with large denominations of dollar bills spread over their chests.
Others are snapped driving meticulously built child-sized BMW’s and Range Rovers, which typically retail for tens of thousands of dollars.
What all of them have in common is their association to big sister hashtag craze Rich Kids of Instagram, which first gained widespread attention in 2012.
Rich Kids of Instagram – which in fact mainly consists of teens – started as a single topic Tumblr blog which encouraged Instagram users to attach the hashtag #rkoi to their ostentatious photographic displays of wealth.
The love-to-hate-it pop culture movement spawned a number of spin-offs, including Rich Dogs of Instagram, as well several spoofs.
Last year, it even inspired a novel penned by Maya Sloan, who also ghostwrote a book with Kendall and Kylie Jenner.
According to Ms Sloan’s description of Rich Kids of Instagram, the novel is a ‘dishy and hilarious tale about the intersecting lives of the world’s most extravagant, unapologetically uber-rich teenagers’.
The year prior, E! launched #RichKids of Beverly Hills, a reality show with a self explanatory title.
