Luis Diáz will wear a legendary shirt number for Liverpool next season, and he may not be the only player following in the footsteps of club heroes.
Following in the footsteps of some of the club’s icons, Luis Diaz will wear a new jersey number for Liverpool in the upcoming campaign. The Colombian has been given the number seven jersey.
Diáz has, of course, worn the no. 23 jersey since moving from Porto in January 2022, but James Milner’s iconic number became available after his relocation to Brighton was finalized.
The move will be made by Diáz next season, following in the footsteps of players like Sir Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, and Luis Suárez, according to Liverpool.
And he might not be the only player receiving a new jersey number in the upcoming campaign.
Last week, images appeared online that suggested Darwin Nunez, who has worn the no. 27 since joining from Benfica last summer, would soon receive the highly recognizable number 9 at Anfield (via The Transfer Room).
Naturally, Roberto Firmino has given up the number as the Brazilian departs Liverpool at the end of his contract, but it has previously belonged to a number of well-known players, including Ian Rush, who holds the club record for goals scored, Robbie Fowler, and Fernando Torres.
Since Alexis Mac Allister moved from Brighton to take the No. 10, most of the famous numbers have now been claimed, though there is still a significant one open for any new additions this summer.
Due to Naby Keita’s departure, the number eight, which was formerly worn by the legendary Steven Gerrard, is also up for grabs.
Other numbers that will be available this summer include 12, 15 (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s former number), 16, 24, and 25, as well as Diaz’s former number of 23 and Nunez’s 27 if the Uruguayan is truly given the number nine shirt.
Numbers 29, 30, or 31 might also be acquired by new hires, while 33 through 41 are also now available.
