Carl Froch has called for Tyson Fury’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk to be staged at Wembley Stadium, in a fresh challenge to promoter Frank Warren.
Fury is set to get his chance at revenge when he faces Usyk in a rematch on December 21 in Saudi Arabia, after losing the first fight by split decision, with his Ukrainian rival winning the undisputed heavyweight championship in the process.
Froch has been feuding with Fury’s promoter, Warren in recent months, with the former super middleweight world champion critical of the atmosphere in the region.
The 46-year-old feels the second meeting should be held at Britain’s national stadium, with Anthony Joshua’s likely clash with Daniel Dubois on September 21 at Wembley going to Saudi Arabia instead.
“I’ve got a suggestion,” Froch said on his YouTube channel Froch On Fighting.
“How about we swap the Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua fight, that’s happening at Wembley.
“Brilliant, thank you very much, the Saudis must be feeling very benevolent.
“How about we swap that one with [the] Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk rematch.
“Let’s have the rematch, Usyk-Fury 2 at the Wembley Stadium and you can take Daniel Dubois-Anthony Joshua out in Saudi Arabia.
“Have a think about that. Give the fans something back.”
Usyk became the maiden undisputed heavyweight titlist in the four-belt era and has requested an exception from the IBF to keep hold of his belt for the rematch, rather than being stripped.
Should the governing body reject his request, Dubois is likely to be upgraded from interim IBF champion to full titlist and face ‘AJ’ in an all-British showdown.
Froch, who beat George Groves in a rematch at Wembley Stadium in 2014, believes ‘The Gypsy King’ may require the full support of his home contingent to avenge his defeat.
“You’ve had the first one,” he added.
“Tyson Fury lost all them belts out in Saudi.
“The undisputed heavyweight title fight was lost in Saudi.
“All them belts gone off to the Ukraine.
“We’d love to get them belts back in Britain, so let’s get this fight back in Britain at the Wembley Stadium, with an unbelievable atmosphere and we can lift Tyson Fury through to the victory.
“Then after that we can maybe get the AJ-Fury match, which is what everybody wants.”
